He was a member of the famous 9th Battalion, and was in the firing line nearly five months before being put out of action.

OUR HONOUR LIST. APRIL`S ADDITIONS - The Chronicle 3 May 1918 p5

April unfortunately made up for the welcome deficiencies of March in the supply of casualties amongst the lads from our district. A list (No. 387) was published on the 1st, and included among the wounded the names of Privates Geo. Robt. Avery, of Woombye (gas) & more.

Not only was George gassed in March 1918 but he also suffered a fractured skull in August 1918.

WOOMBYE - DANGEROUSLY ILL IN FRANCE - Chronicle & North Coast Advertiser, 30 August 1918.

Mrs. George Avery last Friday received a further cablegram advising her that her husband, previously reported wounded, was dangerously ill, suffering from compound fracture of the skull. It is now over a month since Mr. Avery was wounded. We hope the next news will be better.
