Frederick Holt Attwood 6768 Private Frederick Holt Attwood enlisted 26th March,1917 in Brisbane, he was born in Noosa on 4th June,1883. His father was William Attwood 17/2/1851, Middlesex Eng – 23/10/1919, Brisbane. His mother was Sophia Jane Holt 1858 – 1940. He was part of the 26th Infantry Battalion – 20th Reinforcement - embarked from Sydney per A20 “Hororata on the 13/6/1917 26/8/1917 Disembarked in Liverpool joined the training battalion Rolestone, he then joined 5th Training Battalion at Fovant on the 11/11/1917.

27/12/1917 proceeded o/seas from Southport to France and joined Battalion In early 1917, the 26th Battalion joined the follow-up of the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line and attacked at Warlencourt (1-2 March) and Lagincourt (26 March). For his valorous actions at Lagincourt, Captain Percy Cherry was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. On 3 May, the Battalion was also involved in the second attempt to breach the Hindenburg Line defences around Bullecourt. Later that year the focus of the AIF's operations switched to Belgium. There, the 26th battalion fought in the battle of Menin Road on 20 September, and participated in the capture of Broodseinde Ridge on 4 October.

Like most AIF battalions, the 26th fought to turn back the German spring offensive in April 1918, and in the lull that followed mounted "peaceful penetration" operations to snatch portions of the German front line. In one such operation in Monument Wood on 14 July the 26th Battalion captured the first German tank to fall into Allied hands - No. 506 "Mephisto". In another, on 17 July, Lieutenant Albert Borrella was awarded the Victoria Cross. Later in the year the 26th participated in the great offensive that began on 8 August, its most notable engagement being an attack east of Mont St Quentin on 2 September. The Battalion's last action of the war was the capture of Lormisset, part of the operation to breach the Beaurevoir Line, on 3 October 1918. The 26th Battalion was disbanded in May 1919. 18/8/1918 Returned to Australia per “HT Malta” after suffering from Influenza & Hemorrhoids. 5/11/1918 – Discharged From 26th Battalion AIF in Brisbane. From 1905 1910 he lived at Victoria Street, Westend, South Brisbane with his parents and Brother William Jr. Plumber 1909 his occupation was clicker ( could mean Carter).

Frederick & Elizabeth were married 15/4/1911 – BO10021 Qld. They lived at Whynot Street, West End, South Brisbane until 1913 his occupation was drayman. His parents were still living at Victoria Street, Westend and his brother William was living at Rodgers Street with Annie Florence. In 1915 they lived at Hargraves Rd. South Brisbane – Drayman, in 1919 they lived at Merton St, South Brisbane – Carter, then in 1922 they moved to Corbett St, South Brisbane they were still there in 1925. Frederick (known as Monty) passed away on the 23/8/1935 BO28878 – Qld at the age of 52 years

Frederick's Family History His father was William Attwood b.17/2/1851 – Middlesex England – d. 23/10/1919 Brisbane, aged 68 years. His mother was Sophia Jane Holt (Schafer) this name being from her 1st marriage to Joseph Frederick Schafer b. 1850 – d. 1880, aged 30 years. They had 1 child b 4 Jun 1883. Sophia Jane was b 9/9/ 1858, in Amherst, Victoria. She died on June 16, 1940, in Brisbane, Queensland, at the age of 81.

She married William Attwood on October 7, 1884, in Brisbane, Queensland. They had several children during their marriage.
