Chronicle 19 July 1918 p4, RETURNED SOLDIER KILLED. On Monday last a sad fatality occurred near North Arm to a returned member of the Royal Naval Bridging Train, A.I.F., named Wm.T.Barnes. Since returning he had bought a farm, and sold it again when a prospect occurred of his getting back to the Front. He was rejected, however, and then took on some scrub falling work at Mr.W.Davison's farm. The fatality was caused through a falling tree striking a branch of another tree, which, springing back, snapped off, and struck deceased across the forehead so violently that he could not have known what killed him. The body was brought to Nambour for examination by the government medical officer, and was then handed over to the undertaker to be taken to Brisbane, where deceased's parents reside. His father was a former resident of Nindcrry district; the son was a fine specimen of manhood, and was a member of the Ithaca lodge of the Oddfellows F.S.
