Stanley was born in Dungog, N.S.S. and was aged 30 years 11 months when he enlisted at Lismore, N.S.S. on 5th April, 1916. then a Labourer. He nominated his Brother, Mr G.L. Bartlett of CENSORED, N.S.W. as his next of kin but later changed that to his Sister, Mars Martha Jolly of Kyogle, N.S.W. He was posted a Private to the 11th Depot, Enoggera on 15th May, 1916 then transferred to the 15th 25th Battalion on 16th July, 1916. He embarked from Brisbane on 7th September, 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth, England on 2nd November, 1916. He was then overseas to France Ex "Victoria" on 13th December, 1916 and there he joined the 14th Reinforcements on 18th December, 1916. In France, on the 22nd January 1917 he was charged with "Neglecting to obey a standard order that he appears on parade unshaven for which he forfeited 2 days pay. From the 3rd February, 1917 to 6th July, 1917 he was hospitalised in Harve with severe Nephrites and from there transferred to the Grove Military Hospital in London (19th April, 1917). He re joined his unit in France on 9th November, 1917. He was wounded in action in France with a gun shot wound to the left wrist on 4th July, 1918 and hospitalised on 5th July, 1918. He again re joined his unit on 10th September, 1918. He was transferred to the 26th Battalion in France on 12th October, 1918. He was transferred back to England for repatriation home to Australia and embarked in England on 15th May, 1919 Ex "Y pirranga" and disembarked in Australia on 7th July, 1917. He was discharged on 21st August, 1919
