He went on to Melbourne via Sydney and was appointed to Australian Camel Brigade Field Ambulance on 1 March, 1917. Edmund sailed for Middle East from Freemantle on 22 May 1917 on board "Boorara". They disembarked at Suez on 20 June 1917 and he remained in the Middle East for the duration of the war; embarking for Australia on the "Burma" on 26 July, 1919. He was discharged on 2 October, 1919.

Edmund applied for a selection at Beerburrum Soldier Settlement in June, 1921 and was granted Portion 822, an area of 55 acres. He also married in June 1921. Their son Clive was born at the newly built Beerburrum Hospital in June 1922. The plan was to grow pineapples for the newly built cannery in Brisbane.
