Francis was born on Condobolin, N S W and was aged 19 years 3 months when he enlisted at Melbourne on 19th July, 1915 with parental consent supplied. On joining he was a Factory Hand. Her named his Father John Austin on Beaconsfield Road, Albert Park, ? as his next of kin. He attended Signal School, A I F from 14th September, 1915 to 15th October, 1915 when he was transferred to 21st Battalion. On 20th November, 1915 he was transferred to Field Artillery Reinforcements. He embarked from Australia on 5th January, 1916 and was in Zietoun on 14th February, 1916. He was made Gunner on 19th February, 1916. He was transferred to 2nd Reinforcements - 4th F A Brigade at Tel el Kebir, France on 8th March, 1916. 13th May, 1916 - 2nd D A C - Gunner - France... He was In the Field France on 11th February, 1917 and classed as "Driver". He then embarked for Alexandria and disembarked at Marseilles - Posted to B A C Alexandria where he rejoined his unit. He was transferred to the 2nd District Signal Corp, in The Field as Sapper on 11th May,1917. He was granted leave in England from 11th July, 1917 to 26th July, 1917 then rejoined his unit. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in France on 2nd March, 1918. He was again granted leave in Belgium 6th March to 10th March, 1918. He was hospitalised sick in France 0n 26th June, 1918 and returned to duty on 2nd July, 1918. and again in October 1918.30th Match, 1919 returned to England for repatriation to Australia. He returned to Australia Ex "Nestor" on 2nd July, 1918 and was discharged on 24th August, 1919.
