William George Winnett enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 10 December 1915. He was recorded as having black hair, grey eyes and a dark complexion. He was a 28 year-old farmer with a wife and two young children under the age of 3.

William arrived at the 11th Depot Battalion in Brisbane on 17 January 1916. On 8 March his wife, Helen, wrote to Major D’Arcy asking for her husband to be discharged as she was finding it too difficult being in the country, looking after a farm and two young children whilst also battling ailing health. On the same day, William also wrote to Major D’arcy, asking to be discharged for the same reasons, adding that he too was not in the best of health and was writing from the Southport Hospital. William Winnett’s discharge was approved on 13 March 1916.

The Winnetts are buried at the Bribie Island Memorial Gardens. Helen died on 29 May 1972. William died just 7 weeks later on 16 July 1972.
