Upon his enlistment on 10 May 1916 Frederick was age 19 and his occupation that of "farm hand/labourer", his mother Mrs Catherine Winkle, of Beerwah, North Coast Line, Queensland, was recorded as his next of kin. Following his enlistment in Brisbane, Frederick was posted for training to the 13th Machine Gun Company (6th Reinforcement) at Seymour in Victoria. He embarked ship for England on 20 October 1916 and disembarked at Devonport, England, 28 November 1916. From Devonport he proceeded to Perham Down Training Depot, on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, where he continued his training. After a long stint in hospital suffering from Mumps, he embarked, on the 11 May 1917, for France where joined his unit (4th Machine Gun Company) in Northern France's Picardy Region. In August 1918 he received the rank of Lance Corporal. Sadly, a short time later he suffered a serious shrapnel wound to the stomach, from which he never recovered. He died of his wounds in a Military Hospital in Northern France on 28th September 1918. The following year, In May 1919, Frederick's mother, Catherine Winkle received the first of several communications from the AIF Records Office in Melbourne. The first was a package containing some of her son's personal effects, included were a watch in case, fountain pen, pencil, gold ring (broken, one stone missing), cigarette case, cards, small book, YMCA wallet, letters, photos, pocket book, silk handkerchief, 3 coins, and a disc. A later package dated July 1919 contained a sealed envelope containing one letter and a remittance for 10.0.0. pounds drawn on Commonwealth Bank of Australia. In January 1922 Mrs Winkle was finally in receipt of a Memorial Scroll and The King's Message in connection with the late Lance Corporal F. J. Winkle, 4th Machine Gun Battalion.
