Reginald Rufus, the only son of Charles Henry Rufus Barlow and Blanche Constance (nee Powell) Barlow, was born at Eurobadalah, NSW on 9 July 1896 and his birth was registered at Mourya, New South Wales. The family which also included two daughters, moved to Crow's Nest, via Toowoomba where Charles was a Farmer.
Reginald enlisted on 10 September 1917 at the Rifle Range, Brisbane. On 11 September 1917 "The Brisbane Courier (Qld.:1864 - 1933)" reported that 'Yesterday 13 men offered their services. Ten were declared fit, two were referred to P.M.O. and 1 was unfit. The volunteers were ... Reginald Rufus Barlow (Maleny)'. Reginald was aged 21 years and 2 months, a bank clerk working at Maleny via Landsborough and listed his Father, Charles of Crow's Nest via Toowoomba as his Next of Kin. His religion was noted as Church of England. Reginald had previously served for 6 months with the Citizens forces, 7th Infantry. He was attached to the 5th Light Horse Regiment - 30th Reinforcements and embarked Sydney on 2 March 1918 aboard SS Ormonde. He contracted measles on 29 March 1918 while on the journey overseas. Disembarked at Suez 4 April and admitted to Government Hospital Suez with measles. Discharged to duty on 19 April 1918 and marched in to Reinforcement Camp Moascar. 12 March 1918 transferred to 11th Light Horse Regiment.
19 March 1918 Marched out to 5th Light Horse Regiment
6 July 1918 transferred back to 11th Light Horse Regiment 9 July 1918 sick to hospital with mumps and admitted to 66 Casualty Clearing Station Palestine for a fortnight before returning to 11 LHR 31 July 1918.
25 September 1918 Wounded In Action : Gun shot wound to left thigh.
7 October 1918 Admitted to 44th Stationary Hospital
17 December 1918 Rejoined 11th LHR. The Northern Miner (Charters Towers, Qld. : 1874 - 1954), Wednesday 20 November 1918 Page 3 reported that "Reginald Rufus Barlow, Crow's Nest" was wounded.
Returned to Australia per "Dunluce Castle" embarking 17 July 1919. Disembarked 2 Military District 30 August 1919 and Discharged 10 October 1919. Awarded Medals - British War Medal, Victory MedalAustralian Electoral Rolls - 1903 - 1980 indicate that in 1925 he was a Bank Officer at Mangerton in the Brisbane District of Oxley, in 1936 he was living at Wynnum Road, Norman Park with wife, Elsie who was also a Bank Officer. By 1949 he was living with Elsie (home duties) at Windsor where he was a Bank Manager and 1954 was a Bank Manager living at Ascot.The 1958 and 1963 entries show that he is still living at the same residence.
Reginald Rufus Barlow died on the 19 December 1964 aged 68 years.
