Karl emigrated from Norway and arrived in Rockhampton, Qld on 16 August 1899 aboard the "Duke of Portland" from London, England.

Carl enlisted at Brisbane on 28th December 1915 aged 33 years 3 months and by trade was a Bridge Carpenter. He named his Brother Niles of Bergen, Norway as next of kin. He was posted to A. Coy. 42nd Battalion as a Private from 16th January to 16th February 1916. He embarked from Sydney Ex Borda" on 3rd June 1916 and disembarked at Southampton on 23rd July 1916.
He was then posted overseas to France from Southampton on 25th November 1916. He was hospitalised in France on 4th January 1917 and rejoined his unit on 13th January 1917 but was again hospitalised with boils on 19th May 1917. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in France on 25th May 1917. He was wounded in action in France with a gun shot wound to the head on 9th June, 1917 and embarked at Harve for England where he was admitted to the Military Hospital at Bethnal Green.
He was again posted overseas to France Ex "Longbridge" and "Deverill" via Southampton to rejoin his unit. On 26th May, 1918 he was again wounded in action (France) - gassed and transferred to the Richmond Military Hospital, Grove Road, in England. He was transferred to the 15th Battalion on 5th October, 1918. He was sent back to France on 12th October, 1918.
He returned to Australia Ex "Commonwealth" on 13th April, 1919 and was discharged on 28th July, 1919
