Family

Richard Allsopp was the son of George and Mary Ann Allsopp. They were natives of Staffordshire, England.

In the Census for England of Wales of 1901, George and Mary Allsopp and their family were recorded at Fog Cottage 3, Colwich, Stafford. George’s occupation was “platelayer on railway”. The children at home on Census night were Sydney J. (18), Richard (13), and Helen M. (9). Richard’s birth place was shown as “Grey Friars, Stafford.” At enlistment, he provided “Colwich”.

Enlistment

Richard Allsopp enlisted at Brisbane on 2 September 1916. he declared his age as 29 years 6 months and occupation as "farmer". He was 5 feet 6 inches in height, weighed 144 pounds, of medium complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. His religion was Methodist and he listed his mother, Mary Allsopp, Colwich, Staffordshire, as his next of kin.

On 30 November 1916, Private Allsopp was allocated to 10th Reinforcements, 3rd Machine Gun Company but his service in the line in France in 1918 was with 25th Machine Gun Battalion. His service number was 591.

He embarked on RMS “Omrah” at Melbourne on 17 January 1917.

Richard Allsopp married Hannah Crutchley in England while on army service. They were married in the Parish Church, Colwich, Stafford on 1 September 1917. His occupation was “fruit grower”. His father, George Allsopp, was a “gardener”. Hannah’s occupation was “spinster” and her father, Thomas Cruthchley, was also a “gardener”. Hannah was residing at 64 The Vicarage Terrace, Bloxwith Rd., Walsall, Staffordshire.

Military service events included:

-27 Mar 1917: Disembarked at Plymouth – to Machine Gun Training Company, Belton Park, Grantham

-1 Jan 1918: Proceeded to Folkestone and embarked for France

-17 Jan 18: Taken on strength of 25th Machine Gun Company from Base Depot, Camiers

-16 Feb 18: Marched out to Signal School – rejoined unit 16 March

-11 Nov 18: Armistice declared - Marched out to UK for leave

-10 Feb 19: Granted leave for non military employment in UK - fruit growing with J.G. Farr, London Hall Gardens, Weston, Staffordshire, for six shillings per day. He showed himself to be “capable and very keen about his work”.

-10 May 19: Granted extension of leave for stock raising with same employer.

-11 Aug 19: Returned to 5th Machine Gun Battalion

-12 Aug 19: Granted indefinite leave

Private Allsopp embarked on 2 December 1919 on "Shropshire" to return to Australia. He disembarked on 31 January 1920 at Sydney.

He was discharged from the AIF at Brisbane on 6 March 1920.

After the War

Richard Allsop was issued the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

On 21 October 1924, Hannah Allsopp, aged 33 years, departed London aboard “Jervis Bay” to travel to Australia to re-unite with her husband. The ship berthed at Brisbane.

In the Queensland Electoral Roll from 1925 to 1937 Richard Allsopp was recorded at Lawnton. His occupation was "director of horticulture:.

Richard Allsopp, ex-A.I.F., aged 54 years, died on 8 February 1942 and he was buried at Lawnton cemetery, Brisbane, on 10 February. The funeral notices were carried by the “Courier Mail” on the day of the funeral. His headstone supplied by his wife reads: “Life's Work Nobly Done”.
