Obituary.: MR. W. T. ALLEN.
“The death of Mr. William Templeton Allen, 42 years, of Mooloolah, occurred in the Maroochy District Hospital at Nambour after an illness of several months. He was born at Chatsworth, the eldest son of Mrs. W.J. Allen, and the late Mr. R.G. Allen of Gympie.
In his younger days William Allen worked in the Kandanga district. He saw active service in the Great War serving with the 15th Battalion, and was wounded at the Suvla Bay landing. Later he served with the 47th Battalion in France and also in the 49th, when he was again wounded, resulting in his being invalided home. On his return to the Nambour District he found employment with the Forestry Department in the Imbil district.
In 1926 he established a banana plantation in the Mooloolah district where he discovered a combination of borax and flour made an effective antidote to the banana borer. It was so efficacious, members of the Mooloolah Fruitgrowers Co-operative Association recommended it to the Banana Sectional Group Committee. Allen worked on his farm until declining health compelled retirement. Bill Allen was always ready to give a hand in projects working towards improving the district. For a time he was president of the Mooloolah Fruitgrowers' Co-operative Association. He also assisted in the founding of the Mooloolah sub-branch of the R.S.S.I.L.A. holding the office of vice-president at the time of his passing. His wife passed away some three years before. The funeral, was supervised by members of the Mooloolah sub- branch of the R.S.S.I.L.A. and attended by many members of the Maroochy sub-branch.”
