Before the Boer War he was a sleeper getter for the railways
He was admitted to hospital in Camiers with mumps in Dec 1916 and rejoined his Battalion on Jan 17 1917.
In the third week of September 1917 he was detached to the 3rd Brigade for duties as a runner and about 6 am on Sept 20 whist on the front line at Ypres was given an order to take a telephone across No Man's Land. He was reported missing in action on Sept 21 1917. On April 8 1918 a Court of Enquiry determined he had been killed in action Sept 21 1917.

Married Ada Emma Janes on Dec 1 1911, in Queensland and had one son, James William Wylie born 1912.
