John was born in Bundaberg and was of the Prebyterian faith. His parents, (late)Andrew and Christina Anderson, resided at Barolin, Bundaberg, Queensland. He attended the Barolin State School and the Maryborough Grammar School.Prior to enlisting, John was employed as a Bookkeeper at Moreton Central Sugar Mill in Nambour.
John was single and aged 29 at embarkation. He had previously tried to enlist on 1st July 1915 but was rejected.
He went into camp in October of 1916 and sailed with the 6th Reinforcements of 47th Battalion, on October 27,1916. He arrived in England and wes attached to the 12th T.B. Band. He went to France on December 7th 1917, and joined 42nd Battalion on January 3rd 1918.
He served with this Battalion unil May 25th 1918, when he was severely mustard gassed at Villiers Brettoneaux. He rejoined his battalion on July 13th 1918, and went through the "Big Push," starting 8th August 1918, and was again gassed on August 25th 1918.
John was eventually sent to England and was again in training when the Armistice was signed. He left England on the 18th December 1918, and arrived in Brisbane on the 14th February, 1919.
John had two brothers, Andrew, a Lieutenant, who was attached to the 25th Battalion and was killed at Westhoek Ridge, Polygon Wood on the 20th September 1917 and Joseph, service number 7683, who was attached to the 15th Battalion and arrived back in Australia on the 16th December, 1919.
