Jesse Waller Allen was the son of William & Agnes Allen from Forest Gate West Ham in Essex. His birth was registered in England in the Sept Quarter of 1892and I believe his mother died at the time of his birth. In the 1911 Census he was listed with his Father and Step Mother Ellen as a Ships Steward.

The Qld Archives have a Jesse Allen coming to Qld on the Thermistocles in January 1912. I believe this could be Jesse. It is interesting to note that the Thermistocles became a Troop Carrier in WW1.

Jesse's address on his enlistment Papers was given as Glasshouse Mountains, however he enlisted at Fraser's Hill Brisbane. His occupation was given as a farmer. He is said to have been of Fair Complexion with Grey Eyes. His Religion was Church of England. He listed Miss Bot(Bet) Brissett of the Imperial Hotel, Inverell NSW.

His unit embarked from Brisbane on board the HMAT A 46 Clan McGillivray (Photo Above) on the 7th September 1916. They disembarked in England in November 1916 and he left for France in April 1917. The following is quoted on the Australia War Memorials "History of the 9th Battallion" web site - "The Battalion then moved to Belgium for the advance to the Hindenburg Line, and in March and April 1918 helped stop the German spring offensive.

The battalion participated in the great allied offensive of 1918 and fought near Amiens on 8 August. The advance by British and empire troops was the greatest success in a single day on the Western Front, one that German General Erich Ludendorff described as €œthe black day of the German Army in this war€.

The battalion continued operations until late September 1918. At 11 am on 11 November 1918, the guns fell silent. The November armistice was followed by the peace treaty of Versailles, signed on 28 June 1919.

After the war Jesse did a Course in England on Mixed Farming with the Miller Family in Croydon London - from the 28th June to 28 Sept 1919.

He left Southampton on the 6th October 1919 and returned to Australia on the SS Pakela( Photo above). He was discharged on 10 January 1920.

Unfortunately it appears after discharge he moved to New Guinea where he passed away on 15th May 1923 at about 31 years of age.
