Family

William Henry Allen (1845-1903) married Eleanor ("Ellen") Josephine Cooper (formerly Disher) (1845-1915). Eleanor was a native of County Wicklow, Ireland. The couple had four girls and one son, Gilbert Henry, who was born at Cootharaba which is now within the boundaries of the city of Noosa.

Enlistment

Gilbert Allen enlisted at Longreach on 10 March 1915. He declared his age as 27 years and 5 months and occupation as "shearer". He was 5 feet 9 3/4 inches in height, weighed 176 pounds, of dark complexion, grey eyes and black hair. His religion was Roman Catholic and he declared his mother, E.J.Allen at 81 Hutt St., Adelaide as his next of kin.

Private Allen was allocated to 7th Reinforcements of 5th Company, Australian Army Service Corps. His service number was 200. He embarked on the HMAT A21 "Marere" at Sydney on 16 August 1915 bound for Egypt.

Military service events included:

-8 Feb 1916: Disobeying an order at Heliopolis, for which he was reprimanded -18 Feb 1916: Transferred from Heliopolis to Minia -27 Mar 1916: Refusing to obey an order, for which he was confined to barracks for seven days -18 Apr 1916: Attached to Headquarters of 1st Australian Light Horse Brigade -19 May 1916: Admitted to 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance at Kantara with pyrexia. Re-joined unit on 3 June 1916. -21 Jun 1917: Admitted 14th General Hospital at Abbassia with fractured right tibia. Re-joined unit on 1 October 1917. 19 Oct 1917: Proceeded to Desert Mounted Corps Rest Camp at Port Said. Re-joined unit on 8 November 1917. 13 Jun 1918: Admitted to 2nd General Hospital at Moascar with gonorrhoea. Re-joined unit 99 days later.

He embarked at Kantara on 13th March 1919 to return to Australia on HMAT "Ulimaroa". He disembarked at Sydney on 24 April 1919.

He was discharged from the A.I.F. at Sydney on 6 June 1919, medically unfit.

After the War

Gilbert Allen was issued the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He married Evelyn Doris Marion Irvine (born 1897 in Bourke, NSW) in New Farm, Brisbane on 5 April 1921.

In the Queensland Electoral Roll of 1930, Gilbert Allen as recorded at 145 King St., Newtown, Sydney. His occupation was "hotel keeper".

In the Electoral Rolls of 1937 and 1943, the couple were recorded at Gelnfield Rd., Glenfield, which is a town about 40 kilometres wouth west of the Sydney CBD.

His son of the same name, born in 1924, died at Bathurst Military Camp, NSW, on 16 August 1943.

Gilbert's wife, Evelyn, died on 14 August 1944 at Glenfield.

Gilbert Henry Allen, ex-A.I.F., aged 59 years, died in Sydney on 13 January 1946.
