Thomas was born in Gympie and aged 18 years 2 months when he enlisted at Brisbane, Private, on 7th September, 1915 at that time a Draper with Finney Isles for 3 years. He had a previous 3 years with Senior Cadets. He named his Mother Mrs M O'Mara of Victoria Street, West End, Brisbane, Qld. as next of kin.. He was made Driver on 16th December, 1915. He served with 14th D U S - 29th Coy. .A S C.. He embarked in Sydney, Ex "Demosthenes" on 18th May, 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth 0n 20th July, 1916. He was hospitalised at Fargo Hospital from 31st August, 1916 to 14th September, 1916. He was transferred to France from Southampton Ex "City of Dunkirk" on 21st November, 1916.He was admitted to hospital in Calais on 5th January, 1917 with Mumps and transferred to Boulogne. He was discharged to No.1 Com. Depot (Base) on 22nd January, 1917 at Etaples and rejoined his unit on 7 the February, 1917. He was wounded in action at Dunkirk - Gun shot Wound Chest, Right Leg and Left Arm, Air Bomb, -" Malo-les- baines"?? and transferred to England from France on 16th March, 1917 to Dartford Hospital for treatment of wounds. Still having treatment for wounds March and April, 1918. Returned to Australia Ex "Ceramic" on 3rd October, 1919 and discharged on 26th November, 1919.
