Robert John Clarence NIELSEN was born in Gympie on 3 March 1894. A labourer by trade, he resided in Eudlo and enlisted for service abroad with the Australian Military Forces on 11 December 1915, aged 21 years. He served with the 4th Infantry Brigade, 15th Battalion, 22 Reinforcements and embarked from Brisbane for service aboard the HMAT Kyarra on 17 November 1916. He was discharged in Brisbane on 27 March 1919 in consequence of being medically unfit [due] to shell wounds.
Wounded 28th September 1917.

He spent 3 years in Junior Cadets and at the age of 21 years and 8 months, joined the AIF, landing at Plymouth, England 30th January 1917. From there he was sent to Havre, France where he was quickly wounded in action.
Nielsen was admitted to Beaufort War Hospital in Bristol, England with a gunshot wound to the left hand. After treatment and a period of convalescence, he returned to the front in France 14th February 1918.
Battlefield conditions in France were hazardous and before too long, Private Nielsen was wounded a second time and admitted to hospital with wounds to both knees.
This last injury deemed him medically unfit and He was returned to Australia 2nd January 1919. He was honourably discharged from the Army 27th March 1919.
